Smith and Young
Neighborhood Libraries
Staff Meeting
Friday, August 14, 2015
Young NL Meeting Room, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
Attending: Kitty
Myers, Dominick Spinelli, Hallie Jackson, Monique Collins, Ymelda Contreras, Jessica
Jackson, Monique Pickrom, Brittany Robertson, Angell Standfield
* We began the meeting by having an open group discussion
about recent patron incidents that had occurred in either library. It was a
chance to keep each other updated, and also to share tips and recommendations
in case we encounter similar incidents in the future.
1) Smart
Money Manager
a) Kitty
covered the following reminders for helping patrons with payments:
i)
If you are helping a patron that needs to
make a payment and you are not at the SMM computer, please check that someone
is there before referring the patron to that desk. Do not send a patron to an
empty desk.
ii)
If the person sitting at the SMM desk is
away from their station helping another patron, step over to process the
transaction, and then come back to your own station.
iii)
Use your own personal log in for SMM, and
log out after each transaction. If you are stepping over to help a patron and
SMM is already logged in, log out and log yourself in before processing the
transaction, then log back out when finished.
2) Flip
Kits
a) Young
Library had the Flip Kit housing installed this past week, so Kitty went over a
reminder of the Flip Kit process so all staff is familiar and comfortable
checking in and out Flip Kits.
i)
Patrons may check out as many Flip Kits as
desired (not one per person or family).
ii)
Patrons may receive 1 CMH pass for each kit
they return with a completed survey.
iii)
There is a “Please Return” checklist on the
inside cover of each kit that list all items that must be returned. Verify that
everything is present before discharging the Flip Kit. The book and all
non-consumable items must be returned.
iv)
All Flip Kits must be returned to CMH after
each check out to be replenished. If there is a hold on the kit, attach the
receipt to the tag, highlighting the hold location, before sending it to CMH.
v) Visit
FLIPkits.org to help patrons browse the Flip Kit catalog.
3) Navigator
a) Always
use the Navigator version of Kronos for placing time off requests, to ensure
they come through to Kitty properly.
4) Summer
Reading Program
a) The
group had a general discussion about the program. Everyone felt that it went
well this year, with good presenters and good turnout. There are still some
incentives left at each location in case an SRP participant shows up to claim
their prizes.
5) Available
Technology
a) Kitty
led a discussion of some of the resources and information available on the
library website that we may not know about.
i)
Under the “Find It” tab, there is a link to
a page listing the Available Technology in the HPL system (software, scanners,
fax machines, printers, etc.). For example, Central has Skype available for
public use.
ii)
There are several resources available to
help develop typing skills, such as interactive typing games.
6) Spanish
Discussion
a) Kitty
provided some information about assisting Spanish speaking patrons in the
library. She share that HPL is looking at ways to better equip staff to assist
Spanish speakers, which may include vocabulary reference guides and possibly
language classes. Kitty shared a sample draft vocab guide with the group. Since
this is all in the planning stages, we also discussed current best practices
for assisting Spanish speakers.
7) Comments
and Questions
a) Monique
Collins, on behalf of Lawanda Monroe, requested that everyone think about
potential writing resources that can be provided to students during an upcoming
outreach. Lawanda will be doing a writing lab with Kipp students, and would
like to have good online library resources for the students. Ideas and
suggestions can be sent to Lawanda.
Meeting adjourned at 9:20
a.m.
